Veteran Los Angeles Times sportswriter Mike Penner dies at 52

Mike Penner, a veteran of the Los Angeles Times’ sports department who made international headlines in 2007 by announcing he was transsexual and working under the byline "Christine Daniels," has died, the Times is reporting. He was 52. "Colleagues said today that Penner was found dead at his Los Angeles home and that suicide was the suspected cause of death," the Times writes. Times Sports Editor Mike James calls Penner "One of the most talented writers I’ve ever worked with. He was a gentle man, a kind man. It’s just a tragedy."
