Remembering The National: one of the biggest swings — and misses in the history of sports journalism

"When mental_floss asked me to write about my experience with The National Sports Daily — one of the biggest swings (and subsequently one of the biggest misses) in the history of American sports journalism — I took an inventory from my days there as the Chicago Bureau Chief and later as the Detroit columnist," Bud Shaw writes. Shaw, in the piece shares a slew of memorable stories, and sets the tone by telling about a book he has that was authored by Frank Deford, The National’s editor and publisher. Inside the cover of his best-of collection, The World’s Tallest Midget, Deford wrote to Shaw: “It was wonderful having you on this great adventure.”
