Univ. of Georgia seeks Distinguished Professor candidates for Grady College of Journalism

The University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication announces its search for a sports journalist of outstanding reputation and ability to fill its newly-created John Huland Carmical Distinguished Professorship of Sports Journalism. The Professorship will become the Carmical Chair of Sports Journalism.

The Carmical Distinguished Professor will be the core position in a sports journalism initiative that the Grady College intends will be preeminent in the Southeastern Conference and prominent nationally.

The Carmical Distinguished Professor will lead development of an interdisciplinary, teaching and research Center for Sports Journalism and Society.

The successful applicant must have a nationally recognized profile in sports journalism and the ability to direct and expand an educational, research and outreach program encompassing print, digital and video journalism plus sports communication for students desiring careers as sports journalists or in sports management.

Advanced degrees and demonstrated ability to function effectively in a university environment will be welcome.

Responsibilities of the distinguished professor will include classroom instruction, significant fund raising activity and administration of an inter-departmental program involving the Grady College’s programs in newspapers and magazines, broadcasting, online, advertising and public relations.

The distinguished professor will be responsible for developing synergistic relationships with other colleges and departments, such as business and law on the university campus.

We seek a man or woman with a vision for ethical, socially responsible journalism that probes deeply into wider societal issues of sports, such as the business and economics of sports, their impact on the health of athletes, as well as the need to improve reporting and writing of on-field and on-court events.

The University of Georgia is located in Athens, Georgia, 70 miles east of Atlanta. UGA, the nation’s first chartered state-supported university, offers excellent academic programs, is home of the Peabody Awards and fields nationally recognized athletic teams. Athens is a city of 100,000 known for its rich history, recreational opportunities and vibrant cultural life, including music and theater.

David Kindred shouldn’t have to apply for this job, Kent. You should be out trying to recruit him. (Offer him membership at Augusta National.)
