The IU National Sports Journalism Center names Larra Overton, a reporter for the Big Ten Network, editor of SportsJournalism.org
TO OUR READERS We’re pleased to announce that Larra Overton, a reporter for the Big Ten Network and a graduate of Indiana University, has been named the new web editor for the IU National Sports Journalism Center.Larra brings to the job more than five years of media experience as a sports reporter, sports TV anchor and associate producer. While a student at IU, Larra was an intern for ESPN in its Bristol, Conn. headquarters. Larra will continue to bring to SportsJournalism.org the major breaking news stories of the day in the sports media industry. But, she also will enrich the site with a wide array of multi-media offerings, including more video, audio and photos.
In addition, Larra will help make our social media presence on Facebook and Twitter more current and lively. She also brings to the position a real passion both for sports and the media industry. She was a student athlete at IU, competing in four NCAA National Championships from 2003 to 2006 in track and field and cross country.
After earning an undergraduate degree in broadcast journalism and a master’s degree in sport communication from IU in 2006, Larra went to work as an associate producer at WDRB-TV in Louisville, Ky. She produced the morning show for the Fox affiliate, and she also did reporting, shooting and editing for Fox 41 Sports. After more than two years there, Larra became a sports reporter and anchor for WTWO-TV and WFXW-TV in Terre Haute, Ind.
For the past two football seasons, Larra has been a sideline reporter for the Big Ten Network, based in Chicago, doing live broadcasts during IU and Purdue games. “I am thrilled with this exceptional opportunity to join one of the nation’s pioneer sports journalism programs,” Larra said. “Having received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Indiana, I am proud to be part of the exciting developments for both the National Sports Journalism Center and the Indiana University School of Journalism. The board, faculty and staff include some of sports media’s greatest talent, and I am humbled to work with them to achieve the goals of the NSJC.”
