“The great radio broadcasters were always the best storytellers”

"It’s personal and intimate," Dave Sims tells Jim Williams of the long-lasting popularity of sports on the radio. "Marty Glickman taught me the importance of putting the fans in the game, letting them know what was happening at all times. Also, my print background (seven years with the New York Daily News) served me well because, after all, radio is about being able to tell a story. The all-time best like Vin Scully, Bob Prince, Ray Scott, Ernie Harwell and the rest of the great radio broadcasters were always the best storytellers." Sims’ voice is one of sports radio’s most recognizable, Williams writes, adding that Sims’ NFL and NCAA coverage has been heard for years on Westwood One. He also handles the play-by-play chores for NFL Sunday Night Football.
