Richard Sandomir: Despite on-field struggles, Notre Dame deal still a good one for NBC

"You will never hear an NBC official publicly carp at Notre Dame’s recent mediocrity or the 35-27 record that got Charlie Weis fired after five seasons," Richard Sandomir writes. "That would violate the terms of the love story between the university and the network that began 18 years ago and is contracted through 2015." Sandomir writes that the "toughest tough love that Dick Ebersol, the chairman of NBC Universal Sports, could muster was what he offered Thursday during a telephone interview: ‘Unquestionably, we would always like them to have a higher degree of consistency.’" Sandomir also asks, "If Notre Dame is no longer a national power — and it hasn’t been for quite a while — is the NBC contract losing what once made it distinctive? Not yet, it seems."
