Los Angeles Times sportswriter Mike Penner (1957-2009) remembered

"The last email correspondence I had with Mike Penner was predictable," Tom Hoffarth writes. "I traded a few notes with him about some things and asked how he was doing a couple of months ago. He responded, ‘Just trying to get through it.’ I checked this morning, and I still have an email address both for Penner and Christine Daniels. Mostly because I wasn’t sure which one to use after awhile. I’d send messages on both, figuring they’d reach him/her eventually. But the news today that Mike apparently ended his tormented life at just 52 is heartbreakingly sad. It’s not fair." Penner, a veteran of the Los Angeles Times’ sports department who made international headlines in 2007 by announcing he was transsexual and working under the byline "Christine Daniels," died Saturday. || Reaction: "A first-rate journalist" . . . Here. || Penner’s musical side remembered. Here. || Update (11/30): He or she? How the sports media chose to remember Penner/Daniels. Here.
