In my opinion, play-by-play is still somewhat acceptable in covering high school sports. Someone who was not at the game (at least in my area) is not likely to have seen or read any other accounts of what happened.

In that instance, play-by-play can be useful. However, it is still important to tell a story and make your writing engaging. There is no reason to rely on retelling the game to fill space.

The best sports play-by-play I've seen is the live coverage done by (originally) the Guardian and (now also) the BBC in the UK.

They're anarchic, opinionated, full of conversation, and funny. Nothing like a traditional sports story (and I think they're better for it...)

Reinvigorate and/or revitalize them, insisting they be STORIES, not transcriptions. Play-by-play isn't worthless, but it has to be used like any other tool in a story -- sparingly and well. More comment/discussion, plus links to good stuff, here: http://ydrstorytelling.blogspot.com/2009/10/game-story-as-art-form.html
