ESPN Sports Guy Bill Simmons on his Web beginnings: “My goal was to make the welcome screen”

A decade ago, Bill Simmons was making fifty dollars a week contributing to America Online’s Digital City Boston, Noam Cohen writes. “My goal was to make the welcome screen,” Simmons says. Now, Simmons is ESPN.com’s Sports Guy with an estimated 1.4 million page views a month and his new, 700-page book reached No. 1 on The New York Times nonfiction best-seller list last week. "And he has done it without the benefit of the print apparatus — no newspaper column, no contract with Sports Illustrated," Cohen writes. "Indeed, Mr. Simmons, who voluntarily stopped his column in ESPN The Magazine this summer, seems at times to run away from print."
