Drops in Super Bowl ad rates shows recession hasn’t gone away for the sports world

Although Super Bowl ads still bring in big dollars, Jon Friedman writes that the recent news involving rate drops for the NFL’s biggest game can’t be construed as positive news — for professional sports, or for the networks that air their games. "TNS Media Intelligence said 30-second commercials during the February 7 Super Bowl on CBS are going for $2.5 million to $2.8 million, based on bulletins from advertisers and media buyers," Friedman writes. "That’s a decline from last year, when ads averaged $3 million on NBC – a record, according to TNS. This news should scare the professional and college sports associations and the networks. If the Super Bowl happens to be suffering, how the heck could lesser events expect to draw such big bucks? The recession has hardly gone away, quite clearly, for the world of sports."
