Dick Enberg on joining San Diego Padres: “I’ve made this decision, basically, because I love the game”

Dick Enberg is officially the San Diego Padres’ new No. 1 television voice," Jay Posner writes before asking, "So is that good news or bad news for Padres TV viewers? On the one hand, it’s Dick Enberg. I mean, Dick Enberg! Most of us can only dream to accomplish a fraction of what Enberg has during a half-century sportscasting career that’s included just about every major sporting event on the planet. A team would have to be crazy not to hire him, right?" But Posner adds, "Then again, Enberg will turn 75 next month, he makes more mistakes than he used to and he hasn’t been a baseball broadcaster in 25 years." Says Enberg, “I’ve made this decision, basically, because I love the game. "Here’s an opportunity at this stage of my career that I didn’t think was possible. … What better opportunity for any announcer, or anyone who loves the game, than to be able to work in his own hometown?” || John Maffei: In the 1970s, Dick Enberg and Don Drysdale "formed the best baseball broadcast team I’ve ever heard." Here. || Michael Hiestand: It will odd without Enberg on March Madness and NFL. Here.

    Mr. Enberg
A thank from a person who used to listen to the late Rams announcer Bob Kelly. You took over the job as the play by play announcer when Roman Gabriel and those Rams were just beginning to show promise. I loved your delivery along with my friends and feel that you were the best. Despite going to the networks and doing baseball, I will always think of the Rams with you announcing. No one comes close. I had silly hopes that someday you would return(when they were in L.A.). As a former season ticket holder, the announcing was never the same. Thanks for the few years of being a young, vital, exciting play by play guy.
