Below is a list of classes being offered as part of the concentration in sports journalism offered as part of the Indiana University School of Journalism bachelor's degree program. Some courses may not be offered each semester.

Controversy, Conflict and Characters: An Introduction to Sports Journalism
This course will explore the state and practice of sports journalism through case studies of some of the last decade’s most controversial sports stories. Were sports journalists fair? Did they report these issues with context? Did they explore the larger societal issues? Did they explore the economics behind these stories? Did they portray the characters in these sagas as real people? The course explores those issues through evaluating coverage, reading related texts and talking directly with prominent sports journalists, executives and athletes.

Introduction to Sports Journalism in Society
An introduction to sports that takes a macroscopic approach in discussing its societal influence. The course studies sport from a socio-cultural-historical perspective as well as from a contemporary position. It focuses on the converging worlds of print journalism, electronic media, public relations, advertising, documentary and emerging technologies as expressed in the new commercial reality of sport.

Sports Reporting
This class offers an overview of sports writing, from its origins to its current status in the 21st Century. The course will teach students fundamentals of the sports writing process, from information gathering and interviewing to writing and editing copy.

Issues in Sports Journalism
This upper-level course will study sports journalism’s key policies, trends and issues. It examines sociological, political, legal, ethical and technological issues in college and professional sports. It also focuses on current events and controversies in the world of sports journalism, and discusses the symbiotic relationship between sport media and various social groups and provocative issues.

Sports Communication
This course expands on the “Introduction to Sports in Society” course by focusing on sports communication and its components of personal and organizational communication; mass media; advertising, public relations and crisis communication; and research.

Digital Sports Journalism
This 400-level course aims to take the skills learned in basic writing, reporting and broadcasting classes, and teach students how to apply them across multiple media platforms. Students develop an understanding of the basics in writing, blogging, tweeting, videography and other necessary Internet disciplines.

Sports Research
This course addresses the importance of practical and theoretical research in sports and teaches students about the components of solid examinations – refined objectives, precise measurement, appropriate implementation and veritable results.  It studies the effect and importance of ratings, and how media organizations, teams, leagues and sports organizations maximize exposure through research.  Students learn about surveys, interviews in an informal or focus group setting and other research methods.

Sports Broadcasting
This course will offer intensive field experience and training in sports broadcasting and production that is applicable to newspaper websites, television, radio and all forms of new media. This class is intended for those who are serious about making sportscasting their chosen profession and who are eager to work on projects and the packaging of broadcast stories.
