An assistant professor of sports journalism at IUPUI, Laucella has taught diverse undergraduate and graduate classes in journalism and communication.
She worked for three years at IU Bloomington as an assistant professor of sports communication in the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation before transferring to Indianapolis to help start the sports journalism program.
She earned her Ph.D. in journalism and mass communication from the University of North Carolina, where she was a Park Fellow. She also has a master’s degree in media and public affairs from George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and communication studies from the University of Virginia.
Laucella has presented papers at numerous professional conferences and served on panels in several disciplines. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed national and international journals. She is author of Jesse Owens, the Press, and the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games and co-author of Strategic Sport Communication. She has won top paper awards at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s conferences as a graduate student and as a faculty member.
Laucella’s work as a freelance sports writer, sports reporter and project coordinator for the NFL Players Association’s Native Vision Life Skills Camp provided firsthand experience for her research in sociocultural, historical and literary issues in sports journalism.
